Alex Walker’s Serian
Alex Walker’s Serian is a collection of exclusive safari camps in Kenya and Tanzania, offering immersive, personalized experiences beyond traditional game drives. With private vehicles, walking safaris, flycamping, and more, Serian invites guests to truly connect with the serenity and wild beauty of the bush. Rooted in the Masai word for "serene," the camps emphasize disconnection from the modern world and reconnection with nature, guided by experts deeply attuned to the land.
Our camps have the feel of a home opened up and happily shared with you, and the philosophy behind it all was to create a comfortable base for exploration and adventure. Comfort denotes the physical, but more than that – it extends to the ambiance. We wanted to create a space where you can relax and settle in… Somewhere to feel at home, in an environment that is the furthest thing from your home.
Serian the Original, Mara North Conservancy
Serian was the first of Alex’s camps, and it perfectly captures the essence of its name: meaning ‘peaceful, calm, serene’ in the Masai language, it was designed to be a retreat from the bustle of contemporary life, and a chance to experience untamed Africa in traditional tented splendor.
One of just 11 member camps in the private and exclusive Mara North Conservancy. Serian consists of five vast marquees perched on beautiful hardwood decking – one of which is a family suite.
All tents are set on hardwood decking, above the Mara River with views over the Olooloo Escarpment. Each has an adjoining bush bathroom with hot and cold running water, flush toilet, and a shower and custom-made bathtub with gorgeous views over the landscape. You have exclusive use of 4WD Safari vehicle and dedicated guide and spotter.
Serian Ngare, Mara North Conservancy
‘Ngare’ translates to ‘by the river’ in the Masai language, and the idea behind this snug little camp was to transport the serenity of the original Serian camp to the water’s edge. Hugging the banks of the Mara, Ngare Serian is cozy and intimate. It can only be reached on foot, over a narrow rope bridge – and in a way the crossover is symbolic: a call to step out of touch and out of time, and give yourself over to the natural charm of the place.
Ngare is nestled in the private Mara North Conservancy, and is also perfectly positioned to take advantage of our 1,500 acres of exclusive conservation area.
4 vast, spacious tents. All tents set on hardwood decking, above the Mara River with views over the Oloololo Escarpment. Each has an adjoining bush bathroom with hot and cold running water, flush toilet, and a shower. Luxurious bathtubs are built into the veranda decking, with a view over the river. You have exclusive use of 4WD Safari vehicle and dedicated guide and spotter.
Serian Nkorombo, Masai Mara National Reserve
Nkorombo is Serian’s tented mobile camp, set on a private riverside site in the Masai Mara Reserve. This snug little setup is chock-full of character with a view over the rushing Mara River. Much like at Serian and Ngare Serian, life at Nkorombo is low-key and tranquil. Nestled among a stand of wild olive and orange croton, the camp is right next to a lively salt lick that regularly features black rhino, and lion and leopard on the lookout for kill
Nkorombo has more of a traditional tented feel than Serian and Ngare Serian. It is thoroughly canvas, and touches like the time-honored safari showers are a nod to the differences between fixed and mobile camps. The tents are designed to blend seamlessly into its stunning surrounds. Nkorombo has five spacious ‘Selous style’ tents decked out in safari style of yore.. You have exclusive use of 4WD Safari vehicle and dedicated guide and spotter.
Serian Kimya Kimya, Mara North Conservancy
Serian’s Kimya Kimya is set on a private riverside site in the Mara North Conservancy. This snug little setup is chock-full of character with grand views over the rushing Mara River and a lively salt lick that regularly features elephant, giraffe and zebra. Throughout the day, zebra work their way down to the nearby spring for a mid-morning tipple, often displaced by raucous kids wanting to splash around in the warm water spring. This is an active river crossing point; Elephant and giraffe navigate their way through the maze of granite boulders to the opposite bank.
The ancestral ritual of communal fireplace and dining – the essence of sharing. We are social animals, and part of what makes things vivid and real to us is our capacity to share: the joy is dissecting your day, raking over the delicious details and unwrapping the delights over and again, over the fundamentally communal experience of breaking bread. It’s also part of absorbing and storing memories.
This stand alone house is perfect for small groups wanting a quiet and exclusive stay in the bush.
